About the role
Fullstack engineers at Novelty Lab build the surfaces and systems our customers rely on every day — from the APIs that power agent workflows to the dashboards where enterprise teams monitor, approve, and audit what their agents are doing. You will work across the stack in TypeScript, shipping features that need to be fast, secure, and polished enough for procurement teams to trust.
We are a small team, which means your code goes to production quickly and your architectural opinions matter. On a typical week you might ship a new workflow trigger API, build the React UI that surfaces it, instrument the analytics to measure adoption, and join a customer call to understand why the empty state is confusing. We expect you to own problems end to end, not hand off at the API boundary.
We care about the details: load times, error states that actually help, keyboard navigation, and the kind of UI consistency that makes a product feel intentional. If you like building real software for real users — not demos — this is the role.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain full-stack features in TypeScript — Next.js on the frontend, API routes and services on the backend — from spec through production deployment.
- Design and implement REST and real-time APIs that power agent workflows, approval queues, audit logs, and customer-facing dashboards.
- Collaborate with design and platform teams to ship UI that meets enterprise standards: accessibility, role-based access, responsive layouts, and consistent patterns across the product.
- Write tests across the stack — unit, integration, and end-to-end — covering both happy paths and the failure cases customers hit most often.
- Participate in code review, incident response, and customer escalations to stay close to how the product behaves in production.
- Contribute to shared infrastructure: the design system, database schemas, CI pipelines, and observability hooks that keep the team moving fast.
What we're looking for
- 4+ years of fullstack engineering experience building production web applications in TypeScript with React (or a comparable framework) and Node.js.
- Strong instincts on both sides of the stack: you can reason about database queries, API design, and frontend performance in the same conversation.
- Experience building for enterprise customers — audit trails, permissions, data export, and accessibility that meets WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Comfortable working independently on ambiguous problems: you can write a brief spec, get alignment, and ship without waiting for perfect requirements.
- Clear written communication — specs, PR descriptions, and bug reports that your teammates can act on without a meeting.
Nice to have
- Experience with real-time UIs using WebSockets, SSE, or React Query patterns that keep dashboards fresh without over-fetching.
- Prior work on AI-powered products — streaming responses, confidence indicators, and fallback states that make intelligent behavior feel trustworthy.
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL, Prisma or Drizzle, and deployment on Vercel or similar serverless platforms.
Interview process
- 01
Intro call (30 min)
Talk through your background, what you've shipped, and what you want to build next. Mutual fit check, no prep required.
- 02
Portfolio review (45 min)
Walk us through a feature or system you're proud of. We want to understand what you built, the tradeoffs you made, and what the outcome was.
- 03
Pairing session (60 min)
We'll work together on a real problem from our codebase. We care about how you think and communicate, not whether you know our stack cold.
- 04
Offer and references
Fast process. We will not make you wait two weeks for a decision.
